Death Horizon: Reloaded

Strap on a VR headset and get ready to tear apart those undead hordes in Death Horizon: Reloaded from Horizon Lab LLP. This chilling first-person shooter has you trying to escape the Horizon Scientific Research Labs after an outbreak of a mutagenic virus. Twisted and strange abominations stalk the halls and you’re the only one available for the job.

An action-packed game that features a wealth of interesting and satisfying to-fire weaponry, with some that can be dual-wielded for those ultimate Rambo moments. For that personal touch, there’s also melee weaponry that can smash apart those zombie skulls with ease. Featuring eight distinct game modes and co-op, Death Horizon: Reloaded has a lot of toys to try out.

Key / Hash / Deep Wiki II Hunting

At last, the moment we’ve all been waiting for: where the are those keys and hashes at? If you answered, or internally screeched, “IT’S RANDOMIZED,” then you’d be right. Similar to the first game, the keys and hashes you have to find are completely random as to which sites they can be found on. However, unlike the first game, the Deep Wiki II cannot be accessed through the same site/puzzle corresponding to the Welcome to the Game II. Where keys and hashes are found on the site pages themselves, the link to the Deep Wiki II is found in a page’s source code. While I’ve only ever found the link to the Deep Wiki II, I have friends who have also found the link, and as previously mentioned, can only be found in a site’s source code. If you don’t know how to access the source code to a page, just click on the little magnifying glass located to the left of the URL search bar. You know you’ve found a key when you’re randomly scanning a picture, or box of text, and your cursor turns into the Click icon. Some keys place themselves on your desktop when you’ve found them, and others will reveal themselves in the page’s source code.

The Noir

Not that we have faced a bald headed assassin, a psychotic serial killer and militaristic NYPD officers; we now face two ghostly, teleporting masked stalkers known as the “Noir”, comprised of a male and female(Talk about relationship goals).

These folks serve as the main antagonists of the game narrative based but in gameplay they are quite weak. They are more active in the dark which is why it is important to leave some lights on, otherwise they would insta kill you when you get on your PC. Other than that, they spawn across your apartment complex, primarily the window next to your PC and in the hallways. Every in game minute or so, make sure you check the window next to your PC. If you see that there is a Noir staring at you, immediately rise from your chair, face the wall and count to 20(The notes say count to 30 but I always use the 20 second rule as it works and it is quicker!). After that, turn around and the man should disappear. If you ignore the Noir man at the window by going on your PC or if you go close to him, the female Noir will spawn in your apartment and beat the s*it out of you…so don’t go near em.

Also, make sure you look at the hall before entering it as there may be a Noir on the other side of the door waiting to say hi. Simply do the same thing and turn your back and count to 20.

5 At Home Alone Final

Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (All Reviews)

As the game’s title might suggest, At Home Alone Final was in development for quite a while before the current version was released at the beginning of 2022. The end result is a game that ends up being a lot more spooky than it is terrifying, though it still very much warrants its placement in the upper echelons of the free-to-play horror game genre.

The juxtaposition between the cutesy and colorful art style and some of the dark themes and imagery explored throughout the game works remarkably well and helps to amplify the creepiness to ridiculously high levels. Granted, it is a little slow to get going, and the translation is a little sketchy in places, but neither of these things should be enough to detract from the game’s otherwise overall excellence.

Optionally, games can be set up to use Expert Rules, Advanced Variant, or both.

As fa as I am aware, there is no way to recharge your flashlight so my advice is to avoid leaving it on for too long. Instead use it only when the power is out in short bursts so you can see your surroundings.

2. Check the source code of all sites! I’ve seen countless times Youtubers and Streamers who try desperately to find the keys but forgetting to check the source code. Not only can the source code potentially contain keys, it is also the only way to find the link to the Deep Web Wiki II. Don’t be fooled by the schema.com URL at the top of every website, that is not the wiki.

Follow these four steps of checking a website:

• Step 1: Check source code for keys or Deep Wiki II
• Step 2: Check the site itself incase the code is shown anywhere in plain site
• Step 3: Hover over any images to see if they are clickable
• Step 4: Hover over all text to see if anything is clickable

If no key was found, go to another page and repeat.

3. Buy physical items ASAP! Later on in the game you won’t be able to because the Breather and Lucas will attempt to stop you so make sure you got the neccesities(2-3 VPN’s, 1 Motion Sensor and maybe a WiFi dongle) before Lucas spawns.

4. Make sure you practised all 4 hacks! During the late game, the hacking minigames will become a LOT harder and will inflict severe punishments such as huge DOS coin losses or even a wipe of your notes!

5. The Rule of Three. On the Second Deep Wiki, you will come across this site. This site is your one way ticket to the Third Wiki but it involves a trial and error puzzle similar to the first game. Use a notepad or paper to record the patterns of each trio, it saves a lot of time especially when you are an impatient brat like me!

6. Check all pages of a site! Some people ignore the “Contact”,”Purchase” or “Sign Up” links because they think it can’t possibly contain a code… well they do and you need to the Four Steps on each one of them.

7. You do not need a Key Cue to know if a site has a key! Instead, as soon as you load up a website, check your window next to the PC. If it was opened slightly then that means the site has a key so make sure you scour the hell out of it!

Secret Killer

Unlike the other threats in this guide, this killer may not even be active in your game. He is only a threat once you visited the Doll Maker site.

Eventually after that, you will hear music coming from outside your room. Simply look through the peephole and you will see a human sized doll outside your door, being picked up by an old, European man. Immediately the power will go out so you need to go to the maintinence room and turn it back on. Once you make your way back to your room, The Doll Maker will jump you and hold you at knifepoint saying this:

“Good evening. I…believe you’ve seen my work. I do hope you like it. However, I’m afraid this visit is not for pleasure. You see, obtaining the girls I seek for transformation has become…increasingly difficult, and I cannot risk my work by searching for new flesh myself. So…you will provide them for me. Find me a woman in this building and mark the door. I will do the rest. When I am ready for another, you will know. Do not fail me. Do not test me. And I will spare your life. Time is ticking. I left the marker on your door.

Once that has finished, You will find a marker on your door. You need to find a woman under 30 in the apartment complex, otherwise The Doll Maker will kill you. To find a woman under 30,
you will need to hack into the lobby computer using the LOLPY disk that you can find in the Shadow Market. Hacking into the computer will show you the list of tenants and their age in the computer,
as well as their room number. Place the marker on a room number which is owned by a young woman and return back to your apartment. Eventually, you will hear a muffled scream and kicking which signifies that the Doll Maker has kidnapped a woman and your mission is complete…for now.
You see, the Doll Maker will sneak into you apartment and place the marker on your door which means tha you will have to find ANOTHER woman in this building. Good Luck!

Introduction

Now before we start, let’s all come to agree that this game is far more harder than its predecessor, and the fact that no one is making any real progress really stumps everyone what what we’re supposed to do. This guide will serve to help you, based off of everything I’ve come to learn during my own gameplay experience, as well as watching other streamers play the game.

P.S: One of the first things you want to do when loading up a new save is obtaining the flashlight (in the situation that the power goes out on your floor). The flashlight can be located on the nightstand next to the bed. Once you pick up the flashlight, in order to turn it on all you need to do is push F and you should be set for whenever the power goes out.

12 Deathly Stillness

According to its creator, Deathly Stillness was never intended to be an officially released game. It was thrown together in just 17 days and is meant to serve as a tutorial of sorts for other game creators. That hasn’t stopped tens of thousands of people from downloading and enjoying it though, with the title now one of the best free horror games on Steam when it comes to positive review scores.

As per its own description, Deathly Stillness is «a boring third-person shooter with no plot.» As more established franchises like Dead Rising have shown though, there’s nothing boring about tearing through zombies with powerful weapons and this is something that the free-to-play Steam game does exceptionally well. There are some pretty decent character customization mechanics on offer too, though the real fun is in the gameplay.

8 Cursed

Steam Rating: Very Positive (All Reviews)

Most people have probably never heard of Disaster Squad Productions’ Cursed trilogy, which, in truth, is a real shame. The three point-and-click games are full to the brim with passion, and although they rarely end up being scary despite the many horror themes and motifs that can be found throughout them, this doesn’t make them any less enjoyable for players.

It’s always nice to see an indie developer improving with each new game and this is very much the case with Cursed. Not only do the visuals improve from game to game, but so too does the gameplay; painting the picture of a developer who is gradually mastering the tools of their trade. It will be interesting to see what comes next now that the trilogy has been concluded.

Barotrauma

If you’re looking to destroy friendships, test your teamwork skills or just cruise around under the sea experiencing underwater terror with your friends then Barotrauma is the ship you should be sailing on. This underwater horror game gives you and a crew of your mates the herculean task of running, maintaining, and defending a giant submersible as you explore vast flooded subterranean caverns and tunnels.

However, you’re not alone down there. Pirates, bizarre creatures, and leviathans out of legend all cruise these waters. It’ll take a crack team of submariners to get through all that, so make sure your team is up to the task. There are multiple roles to fill and in-depth mechanics and systems to manage on your sub of choice, so there’s plenty to keep a chatty crew busy. There’s also plenty that can go wrong and it often doesn’t take much to sink your sub to the bottom where it’ll get crushed into scrap metal from the extreme pressures. With plenty of missions and submersibles to try out, there are tons of things for an active crew to chew through.

SCP 5K

The SCP facilities have failed, and the subjects are loose. This is the theme behind SCP 5K, fresh off a big uplift and rework after its original release didn’t go so well, SCP 5K seems to be doing much better these days. You and your team play MTF members who have to head into a now abandoned SCP facility to figure out what went wrong and contain anything that might’ve gotten out.

There are a number of missions and raids to try out and each mission is procedurally generated so every incursion into a new facility is going to be different. The types of SCP your Fireteam will run into can vary wildly and there are even options for in-depth weapon customization mid-mission. Though it’s still Early Access, SCP 5K is taking a lot of good steps. If you like Milsim Multiplayer games with a lot of horror then check this one out.

18 Entropy: Zero 2

Released in August of 2022, Entropy: Zero 2 is a free Half-Life 2 mod, boasting new enemies and weapons, an overhauled combat system, and full Achievement support. It allows players to command squads of soldiers as they explore the mysterious Arbeit Communications facility in an attempt to capture Dr. Judith Mossman.

The mod was developed by Breadman and has received overwhelmingly positive feedback since going live on Steam. Though strictly speaking it may not be a free-to-play game in its own right, it really may as well be given the huge number of people who already own a copy of Half-Life 2.

Introduction

During your adventures in this bone-chilling, paranoia simulator, you will come across many threats who are all determined to kill you and give you a Game Over. Each threat is unique and they all require different strategies to combat. Here are the threats you will face in this game:

The Police:
These three polite gentlement are SWAT team members cracking down on illegal and unwarranted content on the deep web to maintain order. They are very good at their job but not very good at entering homes without making a fuss.

Lucas:
Serving in the Polsih Armed Forces for 6 years, Lucas Kumiega was found guilty of war crimes and in order to prove his innocence, he fled to the US and became a hitman ready to do any deeds for the right price. He will lockpick your doors, he will stay in your apartment for 3 months before leaving, and he will call you a fool for hiding in the closet because that is such a cliche hiding spot and nobody irl should ever hide in a closet to hide from a professional Eastern-European hitman, ever.

Noir:
Once upon a time, there was a man and a woman who wanted to enhance their romantic pleasures. So they set up a cult on the deep web, started wearing pale white masks and enlisted in a career of torturing young women and bludgeoning people with a stick within their homes. Oh yeah and they can teleport so don’t make fun of them.

Breather:
This guy is your average meth-addicted, homeless,thug life, sterotypical surgeon psychopath with a blade that will cut into your soul and you question whether or not you should have really went down there to get a flimsy device that beeps whenever you go through it. Unlike other threats, this guy is actually scary and so random that any encounter with him will make you jump.

Secret Killer: Doll Maker
Not much is known about him but he takes his work very passionatley in Dismembering young girls into sex dolls, so much so that he politely asks for your assistance while holding you at knifepoint.
Nonetheless, it is entirely possible to avoid him but you will know when he arrives.
Now that we have introduced ourselves to our villians. Let us get to the strategies.

2 Alien Swarm

Despite now being more than a decade old, Valve’s fantastic top-down shooter Alien Swarm remains just as enjoyable as ever. The game even features cooperative multiplayer, which is something of a rarity in the free-to-play market. Of course, given the size and stature of the developer, this perhaps shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to players.

Alien Swarm doesn’t contain jump scares, nor does it rely on shocking imagery like some of the other great free-to-play horror games on Steam, but it can still be pretty scary when an alien swarm begins to close in around the player’s position. In that sense, the game does an excellent job of creating tension while simultaneously rewarding players for their efforts with satisfying power-ups and weapon drops. For those in the market for a good horror shooter, it’s definitely worth a look.

7 Cry of Fear

One of the most popular horror games of all time thanks to its unique combination of Silent Hill and Half-Life, Cry of Fear is objectively one of the better free-to-play games around. The game boasts a triple-A adjacent experience, with an 8-hour campaign and multiple ending scenarios, on top of a co-op experience and diverse modding community that satisfies anyone left wanting more.

Cry of Fear takes the premise of Silent Hill’s otherworld and puts it into a first-person survival shooter. While the addition of heavy weaponry feels like it might dampen the horror experience, the game still manages to do a fantastic job of making the player feel helpless, with limited resources and unsuspecting scares hiding around every corner.

16 Don’t Be Afraid — The First Toy

There are plenty of free horror games on Steam that rely on subtlety, but Don’t Be Afraid — The First Toy really isn’t one of them. Just about every element of this game was designed to be spooky, and, for the most part, developer Broken Arrow Games delivers on this front.

The game places players into the shoes of Jamie, a young boy who has been kidnapped by a psychopath. As they explore the house in which they now find themselves imprisoned, they’ll stumble upon plenty of terrifying imagery, all of which is backed up by a simple yet surprisingly effective score.

Empty Shell: Prologue is one of the most atmospheric free-to-play horror games on Steam. Its art style is delightfully deliberate and helps to turn what might otherwise be a fairly generic experience into an adventure that is dripping with tension and suspense. The game features excellent enemies, perplexing puzzles, and a surprising amount of lore for players to immerse themselves in.

Some will perhaps argue that games with roguelike design elements are a dime a dozen these days, and while this is certainly true, Empty Shell: Prologue uses these mechanics to great effect. Those who enjoy difficult video games will love what’s on offer here and will no doubt be left wondering what exactly is in store for them when the full release arrives.

Dark Deception is a little bit like Pac-Man, only with pink shards instead of tiny yellow balls and terrifying monkey bellhops replacing all the ghosts. The giant maze that players are forced to navigate is equally intimidating, with the rundown hotel providing no safe havens in which players can hide to catch their breath.

It’s perhaps that last detail that makes Dark Deception such a great free-to-play horror game, as players are forced to remain on guard for the entire duration of their playthrough. Knowing that one of the evil monkeys could be lurking just around the corner is really quite frightening, as too is being chased by one only to find the path ahead blocked off by another.
