Here’s a good ol’ fashioned beat-em-up, courtesy of Tribute Games. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is an old-school side-scroller that pays homage to the TMNT games of bygones past. If you’re a fan of the sewer-dwelling reptiles then you’ll love the pixelart renditions of favourite characters from the series, both heroes and villains alike.

This entry is a little different from others on our co-op list, in that its co-op playstyle is much more laid-back than many others of its stress-inducing co-op cohort. What’s great about Shredder’s Revenge that its undemanding basic button-mashing becomes one of its biggest strengths, making it perfect for groups of friends who just want an arcadey jaunt while also having a nice chinwag surrounded by empty pizza boxes.

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan

What happens when you take a single-player game about traversing intricate puzzle rooms with portals, and then double everything? It becomes twice as complicated and twice as satisfying. Portal 2 already expands on everything introduced in the bite-sized Portal, adding things like Excursion Funnels, Thermal Discouragement Beams, Propulsion Gel and other fancy sounding words, but the addition of another player changes things the most.

Four portals make each room more confusing to explore, especially when you consider both players need to reach the exit. In essence, many rooms require two solutions. Some puzzles require both thought and dexterity, and firing your friend across a chasm by moving a portal while they freefall through another eventually becomes as normal as walking.

There’s a lot of personality in the design of the two robotic protagonists, too — the Laurel and Hardy of shiny metal. When you’re working together, you’ll be high fiving each other’s metal hands and barking possible solutions through your headset.

If you’re not using chat, Valve were kind enough to provide lots of ways to communicate in-game, with players able to place markers and emote. Every puzzle solution is punctuated by a dance. Portal 2’s co-op is an experience you can’t quite replicate, its systems a perfect balance of cooperation and friendly rivalry. Grab a friend and become the most stupid pair of geniuses around.

Playing Rayman Legends with a friend is the best way to enjoy it. A simple game to learn, Rayman Legends is all about maintaining the player’s momentum. The levels are designed to trip up players, so timing is literally everything.

Rayman Legends gets more and more complicated as it goes on, and levels gradually become more abstract, so much so that players are unlikely to find the same style anywhere else. What is cool about Rayman Legends is that, unlike other platformers, the world changes, offering more challenges and things to do.

The fourth installment of Frozenbyte’s popular series, Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince sends three heroes on a journey to save Prince Selius from his dark visions that are beginning to spill into reality. Trine 4 can be played in couch co-op, online, or a combination, so there are no obstacles preventing gamers from enjoying this magical platformer together.

Trine 4 is one of few puzzle platformers with an interesting story that develops as players progress through the levels. Fans who enjoyed the emphasis on storytelling in It Takes Two will probably appreciate Trine 4’s as well, and the game environments and art style are captivatingly beautiful. The levels require players to use the heroes’ different abilities to accomplish goals, so players who enjoyed that aspect of It Takes Two can experience it again with Trine 4.

Detroit Become Human

Developed by Quantic Dream, Detroit Become Human is a story-driven game that follows three androids whose stories coalesce over time.

While playing as each of these characters, players have to make various decisions that will impact their story and relationships.

At the end of each section, you will get to see a flowchart of the choices you made and the various other branching paths you missed.

There are a ton of different options and endings to Detroit Become Human, some of which can be incredibly harrowing.

This game is certainly extremely thought-provoking, and it challenges players to make many difficult moral decisions.

What is this? Fortnite? If you thought battle royale was the only Fortnite experience to be had, you thought wrong Miss or Mr. Fortnite: Save the World pits you and your friends against hordes of enemies called Husks (think zombies). Mother nature said eat this and summoned a giant supernatural storm that wiped out pretty much all of humanity aside from a few survivors. Your mission is to save the survivors, eliminate the husks, and ultimately bring an end to the storm. Refreshingly, the writing and voice acting is actually pretty good, something one wouldn’t expect from a game mode that’s #2 in popularity. If you’re a big fan of Fortnite: Battle Royale, you’ll be pleased to hear you can earn V-Bucks while playing the Save the World mode.

Unfortunately, this game is not free like Battle Royale, you’ve got to pay around $40 bones or wait for a deal to roll around and get it at a discount. For the money, you get a co-op experience chock full of side quests, challenges, weapons, and random events and enemies. The gameplay itself takes a little getting used to. Unlike most co-op games, you’ll end up spending a good bit of time exploring different parts of the map without your friends at your side (up to 3 others). This time is spent completing mini-events and collecting resources in preparation for building fortifications to survive those hordes of husks we mentioned earlier. On the harder missions, collaborating on when to build and where, what class abilities to use and when, how many resources to expend, and which enemies to target become key. Everyone better find their headset and their voice!

An update in 2019 tidied up the interface so doing things like navigating the menus, weapon upgrades, and modifying things like character abilities is much easier. Sure, Save the World doesn’t get as much attention from Epic as Battle Royale, but there’s still a stream of new content and events flowing into a river that appears to be widening. Epic says Save the World will go free-to-play soon enough, so expect even more players to jump in at that time.

As Supermassive Games has proven, interactive dramas can be a good fit for co-op experiences. While Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, and The Quarry are all fun, they are horror games and quite far removed from It Takes Two. Consequently, Interior Night’s As Dusk Falls is a more complementary recommendation since, similar to Hazelight’s title, it also deals with family relationships.

Don’t get it twisted, As Dusk Falls is an impressive title from an Indie studio that deserves the praise it’s getting. But it can always be improved.

It gets rid of the crafting and creating that made the original LittleBigPlanet games so endearing and channels its focus into delivering a fun but deviously tricky platformer.

Throw in a second pair of hands and you can have tons of fun exploring and traversing weird and wonderful levels together.

In Moving Out, it’s fair to say that it takes two to successfully move furniture without breaking it constantly.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley hands you the keys to a run-down farm in a small, lazy town and asks you to turn its fortunes around. But it’s not pushy: you and your friends can do as many or as few chores as you want. You can chop up wood and plant crops, fish and trade, craft and scavenge, or you can just wander around town chatting to the pleasant townsfolk. This game became famous for its relaxing singleplayer mode, but the online co-op is, in our opinion, the best way to play. 

If you’ve already got a save going, you need to build some cabins to add your friends, or you can all start a new game with a shared farm (progress only saves for the host). With up to three co-op partners, you can come up with freeform projects, dividing up tasks to hasten production. Or just sit around, watching the sun go up and down – it’s your farm, your rules.

Sea of Thieves is an online pirate sandbox. The goal is to be able to manage or become a part of a ship crew to explore the sea and the islands. 

In particular, it’s a first-person action-adventure sandbox with a persistent online world. Servers can hold 2 to 20 people, and a pirate crew can hold 1 to 4 pirates working together. 

Here, you’re a pirate completing quests for trading companies. You can explore the open world from a first-person perspective and via pirate ships. And if you encounter other players, you may work together or fight them for their loot. 

No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky has been a fun redemption story to watch unfold. Developer Hello Games has spent the last seven years updating its galactic exploration-survival sim with expansive new features like base building, guilds, and most importantly, online multiplayer. No Man’s Sky is now some of the most fun you can have in a co-op survival sim. The game still occasionally buckles under the weight of annoying bugs, but it’s worth powering through for the joy of discovering planets and bizarre creatures with friends. If you’re looking for a space-faring survival game with a bigger focus on building, you should also check out Astroneer.

This wacky and puzzle-filled cooperative romp sees players wobbling their way through a wide array of levels. The wonky ragdoll-like physics create a hilarious gameplay loop that sees players attempting to pull levers, move objects, and more all while struggling just to remain upright at times.

Human Fall Flat has a lot of replayability thanks to its fun (and funny) mayhem-infused gameplay, with costumes to unlock and multiple levels to explore. There are even hidden secrets to be found and some of the puzzles are a blast to solve with friends.

If you liked the interactive storytelling approach to games that A Way Out displays, try out House of Ashes! This survival horror game will ask you to make some small decisions, like how to talk to your peers, and some big decisions, like whether or not to try to jump a gap, and add it all up to see how well you survive a veritable underground nightmare.

The game is totally accessible in single-player, unlike A Way Out, but the co-op mode is basically seamless! Instead of one player switching between characters, the various players will be assigned to characters in each scene.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Heavy Rain isn’t just one of the best games like Until Dawn; it is also extremely similar to Life is Strange.

The story revolves around a serial killer known as the Origami Killer and the choices players make as any of these four characters can have deadly consequences.

All gameplay revolves around interacting with environments and quick-time events, and if you’re not fast enough, any of the characters can die.

Galaga is a spaceship with various people controlling every aspect of the ship. The setting delivers a 2D co-op space shooter, and you can play alone or as a 4-player team. That works either locally, online, or with AI players. 

You can explore the galaxy while managing the various parts of the ship: shields, thrusters, lasers, and turrets. Teamwork is the key to defeating the forces of “Anti-Love” while you rescue “space bunnies” in space. 

Another element is ship customization. You can find space gems as you explore to add new abilities and tools to the ship. Moreover, levels are randomized, so the loot is always different.

This third-person shooter really brought gamers together when it first dropped on the Xbox 360. Army Of Two has everything that a staple couch co-op shooter should have – freedom for both players to experience the game differently and be really fun. Army of Two makes both parties feel important.

Playing rock, paper, and scissors while deciding who gets the stealth kill always adds a new level of fun because both players would still engage. To run into an area with a player and their friend would be unrivaled because of the chaos of gunfire and the screaming while shouting at players would get any player’s blood pumped. Generally, Army of Two did what many co-op games couldn’t, and that is making both players feel like they are the heroes in their own sense.

As Dusk Falls is an unusual game, and if you’re an action junkie, you won’t enjoy it much. The game’s multiplayer mode will take you on a wild ride as every decision players make impact the outcome of the story, though, and you’ll have to agree on the next steps to take.

As Dusk Falls was just released in 2022, and will give you something interesting to play around with if you’ve tried nearly all of the older games on this list.

Klei fought shy of adding co-op to its brilliant game of goth survival whimsy for a couple of years, reasoning (not unreasonably) that the addition of other people might break its esoteric spell, which relies on feelings of isolation and discovery. Turns out the developer needn’t have worried, because a disaster shared is even more fun. The mutual blame when a deerclops stomps through your camp, ruining days worth of winter prep, is a strategy game in itself.

In keeping with Klei’s attention to detail and balance across its games, the core Don’t Starve experience is tweaked across Together’s three modes—Survival, Wilderness, and Endless—to ensure revival items and certain character abilities aren’t overpowered. It’s Endless mode that you’ll likely find most enjoyable, chilling out on Discord with a friend whilst pooling your resources to try to keep each other alive against the increasingly brutal effects of the seasons.
