Deep Rock Galactic is a 4-player co-op FPS. It features a procedurally generated cave system, randomized quests, and an intuitive crafting system. Moreover, it’s a co-op PvE experience with no PvP, like Valheim.

You pick one of the four Dwarf classes to play solo or co-op. Then, you get a randomized mission about finding resources. You use these items to upgrade your gear and improve your character. Additionally, you can level up to unlock apparel, abilities, and ability slots.

You can dig anywhere, mine anything, and fight bug-like creatures as you “work.” Enemies attack in swarms, fast and vicious, so combat is often better when you’re part of a team. The best part of the game is how different Dwarf abilities mix very smoothly to hold enemy hordes and waves. 

Crusader Kings II

The driller is effective across low and high hazard levels with the right focus and use of Bosco in solo gameplay. Utilise the driller tips below to boost your survivability and speed across the various mission and enemy types of Deep Rock Galactic.

• Your primary goal when playing as the driller is to save your team time, this means looking for potential locations where you can create a tunnel. Tunnels that will be used multiple times are particularly worth the investment and your team will thank you for your efforts.
• Don’t limit yourself to the horizontal plane when using your drills as they are a highly effective at creating stair like structures that provide a reliable and permanent source of vertical movement.
• Use your satchel charge early and often, there are many Deep Rock Galactic game types that you’ll know where the swarm and other attacks are coming from so placing one to trigger at the right time can be a team saving action.
• The driller has the strongest terrain manipulation abilities in the game with satchel charges and your drills. Using this to clear firing lines for your team of obstacles or flattening terrain can be a useful advanced tactic that might seem like a minor activity but can vastly boost your allies ability to deal damage and survive. For an advanced (although limited) tactic you can even create bunkers from the environment although you should be careful when doing so and ensure your teammates are on the same page with this strategy.
• As a driller your role varies heavily depending on your weapon selection. If you’re using the flamethrower for example your goal should be sweeping the area for small enemies to let your team focus on the larger threats. The reverse is true if you opt for a cryo based build though as your focus shifts to controlling the larger enemies and boosting other damage sources against them. A driller can be equally effective with flamethrower or cryo if you keep this gameplay difference in mind.

Terraria is an open-world survival craft and sandbox game in full 2D. It uses its 16-bit graphics and old-school style to great effect, though, as it’s one of the most popular games in the genre.

The gameplay revolves around exploring below and beneath the surface. You’ll gather resources, find tools, and loot weapons as you explore. These three things will “progress” your character, as all of your skills and stats depend on your gear. 

There’s also a wider storyline about rescuing and helping NPCs. You can find these characters in different parts of the world, save them from a monster, and create a house that suits their needs. Also, you can do so alone or in co-op, with up to 8 players online.

6 Deep Rock Galactic

Rock and Stone! Perhaps the mining game with the most terrain-changing capabilities, outside of voxel-based games like Minecraft or 7 Days To Die. Deep Rock Galactic is a class-based looter shooter that puts you in the shoes of a rough n’ ready Dwarf, dropping into the underground of a hostile planet, completing objectives for your mining company, and then going home to prepare for the next drop.

It’s a satisfying blend of fighting monsters, completing objectives, and of course, mining. You drop into a procedurally generated map and are given places to go and goals to complete, but how you get there is up to you. Sure, you can try to find passages that lead you to your objectives, but why do that when you can make your own? Depending on your class, you have tools to drill and explode tunnels, or traverse chasms to get where you’re going. The environment is very destructible, too. If nothing else, you’ll always have your trusty pickaxe.

You’re not limited by your mission, either, since you can collect all sorts of resources and use them back home for all kinds of upgrades, from cosmetic to practical.

Genesis Alpha One

Genesis Alpha One is an action-adventure roguelike shooter game that combines popular gameplay elements like resource management, First-person action, and ship-building mechanics to give players a comprehensive space simulation game.

Humanity is on its last legs, so corporations come together and arrange one last expedition into space to try and scavenge for valuable resources that can help get the planet back on its feet. Hence, in this game, players take on the role of captain of the all-important expedition starship named Genesis and travel to unknown places in space in the hope of coming back with precious loot.

The sprawling space in this game is procedurally generated, so each mission the player undertakes is going to be different from the previous ones, adding to the overall excitement and fear of gamers, while also keeping the game fresh and engaging at all times.

Sons of The Forest

Like it’s predecessor, Sons of the Forest is mysterious and well thought-out. You once again wind up in a desolate forest with strange, mutant creatures and have to fight and build to survive.

What makes Sons of the Forest really unique is its surprisingly deep and complex story, together with it’s graphical polish and clever game design. There is less to fiddle with, which means all the more time to explore the happenings on the island and face off against its horrifying aberrations. At least this time you have company, in the form of surprisingly competent NPC companions.

Survival Features

Resources are plentiful, but they can pose a challenge when it comes time to go on longer expeditions (including spelunking). While combat can at times be challenging (or frightening, if you are ambushed), the survival mechanics are simple and streamlined, as much about customization and upgrading as they are about, well, surviving.

XCOM 2

XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown and is set in the year 2035, after 20 years of the events of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. XCOM is a military organization that is fighting an alien invasion.

The player assumes the role of a commander, who is the head of XCOM. The game artists drew inspiration from the movies like Elysium and Oblivion.

The game is played from a top-down perspective, and to create variety in the levels, the maps of the game are procedurally generated.

Apart from the single-player campaign mode, the game also features a one-on-one multiplayer mode. In its multiplayer mode, two players try to eliminate each other’s squad which is composed of both XCOM and ADVENT (aliens) members.

Bosco, You’re The Best

Deep Rock Galactic is better with friends, and it’s also the best experience the game has to offer. However, if you find yourself with a lot of time or tend to run a lot of solo missions, you will become quite familiar with Bosco. The drone known as Bosco only appears when you are down in the caves of Hoxxus by yourself. The achievement Bosco You’re The Best is to complete 100 solo missions; it’s simple for some but can be difficult for others.

While Bosco is helpful, coming equipped with rockets, lights, and the ability to mine out minerals for you, it is not quite the same as playing with other dwarfs. However, if you become fond of playing by yourself, or just because you like working with Bosco, this achievement should come with ease. The achievement also states it’s just 100 solo missions, not restricting you to any Hazard difficulty, so if you want to knock out this achievement as quickly as possible, play on Hazard 1 or 2 to get out of missions even faster.

Alien Swarm

Alien Swarm is also a top-down perspective alien shooter video game. This game is the remake of a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. The game features co-op gameplay for up to 4 players.

The gameplay includes progressing through the levels while facing waves of aliens. A player can equip himself/herself with helpful items from a list of 40 different items including – rifles, grenade launchers, mines, and others.

The player can choose one of the four different classes including – Officer, Special Weapons, Medic, and tech. Each class has two different characters, that a player can choose from.

There are several gameplay elements other than just shooting aliens like welding, hacking, and other that makes the game fun and worth playing.

Coming to the next game on our list, Helldivers is a top-down, hardcore, cooperative shooter game in which up to 4 players have to work together and take part in intense, adrenaline-fueled combat while completing the various objectives given to them in the process as well.

Solo play in this game is indeed possible but not recommended as there are different roles players must take during gameplay and it is much easier to accomplish this when they are playing with at least another player. This game also has friendly fire enabled, so players will have to be careful when firing their weapons too close to their teammates or they might injure them.

In this game, players are given the option to equip a loadout of their preference whenever they look to start a new mission. Moreover, the game also has its very own Stratagem mechanic in place which suggests load-outs and weapons to players based on either the map they are selecting or their previously used preferred items.

Valheim

Valheim skyrocketed in popularity after its launch in February of 2021, and it’s not very hard to see why: it combines some of the best parts of modern open world survival crafting games while trimming a lot of the fat, and even has an actually engaging combat system, which is rare in the genre. To make things even better, its folk-y, one-with-nature viking theme fits it perfectly. It’s hard to believe a team of ~25 people produced this masterpiece.

There’s just so much to love about Valheim. It has a simple story you can follow, which is perfect for people who get lost or bored in full sandbox type games. It has vibrant colors and a simple cartoon-y aesthetic, making it enjoyable for people of any age. There’s enough stuff to do for you to always feel like you’re working towards something, but there’s never so much that you feel overwhelmed. Grab a friend and try it out!

Survival Features

Valheim re-imagines staple survival features, with the intent of alleviating frustration by making interacting with them rewarding rather than punishing. There’s a hunger meter, but going hungry won’t kill you — instead, you gain extra health and health regen by having a high hunger bar, with specific food giving specific extremely useful buffs. There are weather conditions, but most won’t kill you if you don’t have appropriate clothing, just apply temporary debuffs that hinder you. Shelter however is pretty traditional, in that it protects you from roaming enemies while you rest, and occasionally there are events which cause hordes of enemies to rush you, where having a well-developed shelter can greatly improve your chances of survival.

What’s Good About It

• Trims the fat & offers only the “meat” of the genre
• Great combat system
• Offers something for everyone
• Simple, beautiful graphics make it family-friendly & allow it to run well on any PC
• You’re a viking!

What’s Bad About It

• Updates aren’t very frequent
• Certain systems are a bit confusing at first
• Support for mods is somewhat lacking

8 Wall World

In many ways, Wall World plays out like a sideways Dome Keeper. You switch off between mining for resources to upgrade your base with and defending against waves of enemies. The differences, however, are crucial.

Instead of a dome, your base is the Robospider, a Spider/Tank hybrid, and instead of one mine, you excavate several as you make your way up and down an allegedly infinite wall. The game is also a roguelite instead of a roguelike, so even failed runs are rewarding as you incrementally improve your situation.

Wall World also has a little bit more story and lore, so there’s more than just resources to dig up as you attempt to thrive in this vertical world.

ICARUS

ICARUS is a survival sandbox game with one of the most rich character customization and crafting systems in the genre. Developer RocketWerkz and gamerunner Dean Hall, creator of DayZ, wanted to shake up the genre with a session-based, mission-focused concept. The result was a survival sandbox game with the feel of an action adventure title. To complete each mission and survive to tell the tale, you have to tailor your build and the equipment you choose to start with. ICARUS also challenges a staple of most sandbox games, that structures are permanent. While the game is open-world and you can build anything anywhere, the map is wiped and reset at the end of the mission. (That is, if the violent weather and fauna doesn’t destroy the build first!)

In ICARUS, you play the role of a prospector trying to extract valuable resources from the surface of Icarus. It is a hostile and unforgiving planet where terraforming failed, but has not deterred a cadre of mining factions eager to pillage the planet for rare elements called Exotics. This setting provides ample fodder for tons of missions, like scanning for drop zones, opening up mining routes, or exterminating alpha predators dining on your fellow miners. It also sets up another aspect common in action/adventure/FPS titles, but not survival sandbox: economy. You trade in mission rewards and exotics to research and build powerful late-stage equipment that you can reuse on any mission. And with a deep talent tree for character specialization and a lobby that can support 8 players, ICARUS is a great title for fans of co-op building and PvE adventure.

Survival Features

ICARUS goes far beyond the basic hunger/thirst/health meters. It sports the most detailed and dynamic weather system in the genre, which constantly influences how you plan and progress through the game. Its mission-based gameplay loop also allows them to impose a mission timer, after which your prospector is left to perish on the planet surface (with optional permadeath).

What’s Good About It

• Frequent content updates and 2 planned DLCs
• Two 64 km² hand-crafted maps
• Outpost mode for permanent builds
• Active player community for help or co-op

• Building progress erased after each mission
• Resource grinding can be slow

Without A Paddle Achievement in Deep Rock Galactic

The last achievement on this list is the Without A Paddle achievement. The description of the achievement is to be the last dwarf standing in your party, have no ammo for your primary and secondary, and a Dreadnaught just spawned. This seems incredibly hard on paper, but there’s a way around this achievement that few players have discovered yet.

While this achievement would have you believe you need to be in a squad, be the last one standing, and defeat a Dreadnaught with just a pickaxe, this isn’t the case. All you need to do for the Without A Paddle achievement is enter a solo Hazard 1 Elimination mission, expend all of your ammo, and pickaxe the Dreadnought cocoon. After the dreadnaught spawns, you should be awarded the achievement; then, you can resupply and kill the boss normally.

If you did attempt this achievement the hard way, having all your teammates down, no ammo, and trying to pickaxe a Dreadnaught to death, this achievement is the hardest in the game.

V Rising

V Rising is an isometric action-RPG / survival-craft hybrid. You play as a Vampire lord looking to rise in power by building up a castle. It’s also an online experience: its servers support 12 players, and anyone can play with or against you. 

You start with a basic melee weapon, no armor, and a quest line to find resources. Moving and fighting in the open world happens through a WASD combat scheme, so you need to aim your melee and ranged skills.

Then, you level up, customize your skills, gear up, defeat bosses, and loot up. There’s a night/day cycle, so, while you explore at night, you can craft your gear and continue building your castle.

В какой MMORPG самый сложный и продуманный крафт? Нам не пришлось долго думать над ответом на этот вопрос. Космическая песочница Eve Online поражает не только масштабом космических сражений с участием тысяч игроков, но и тем, что абсолютное большинство кораблей и построек в игре созданы игроками.

Как построить корабль в Eve Online? Для начала вам понадобится чертеж. За исследование чертежей в игре отвечает отдельная ветка навыков, и опытный инженер способен на базе обычного дешевого крейсера разработать мощный боевой или разведывательный корабль второго уровня технологий. 

Для строительства понадобится производственная цитадель, которая тоже построена и установлена игроками. А где взять ресурсы для крафта? Руду добывают из астероидов и лун игроки-шахтеры на специальных кораблях, а другие игроки перерабатывают ее на ценные ресурсы, из которых уже можно что-то производить. Но сначала нужно заправить цитадель, а для этого нам понадобится топливо, которое тоже кто-то производит…

Производство в Eve Online — невероятно сложный процесс. Один персонаж не способен организовать полностью самодостаточный производственный цикл даже для т2 крейсера, а для создания капитального корабля класса титан потребуются усилия сотен игроков. Но если вы все же решите потратить время на изучение крафта в этой фантастической игре, будьте уверены, со временем это окупится сторицей.

Breakwaters – PC

If you think you need giant monsters and swanky water physics in your survival game, then this upcoming game is for you. The world of Breakwaters is filled with dangerous Titans and Golems that are as big as a small island. Manipulate waters with the special Refined Crystal to locate rare materials on the ocean floor, craft shelter and tools, and fight back against the Titans’ threat.

Soaring Pixels plans to release it in Q2 2021. This game shows a lot of promise, especially with the beautiful water physics and Michael Bross‘s (Ratchet and Clank, Oddworld) music. If all goes well and launches on time, I think it’s worth being excited about.

Red Faction

Eco – PC

A very ambitious title — not just for the survival genre, but also in general. It’s stated to have a “fully simulated ecosystem” with thousands of dynamically growing plants and animals. You’ll need to construct a thriving civilization that’ll be able to stop a meteor threat sometime in the future by consuming the resources around you.

But be careful, too many disruptions in one species can have ripple effects across the planet. Thus here, your job isn’t just simply trying to survive in the wilds and from the impending doom, but also maintaining a delicate balance of nature and technology. Strangeloop Games has said that Eco is going to be updated forever, so we’ll see how far this “forever project” will go.

For when you need more anime in your survival/crafting games.

Raft – PC

As its name stands, your main task in this game is to scavenge resources and build yourself an ever-expanding floating home worthy of survival. Be it on land or in the water, be wary of dangerous wild animals such as bears and sharks that will hinder your attempt at staying alive. Unlike the previous four games, this one does have a friendly fire feature.

But developer Redbeet Interactive said that there’s no incentive to actually do PVP and it can be deactivated as well. Unless maybe you want to make a fight club for fun, I guess. Interestingly, Redbeet also said that you’re able to host infinite numbers of players. Although so far seven to eight players seems to be the ideal amount.

Survivalist: Invisible Strain – PC

Now we’re getting into the Early Access territory. Lots of interesting survival games are still being actively developed. Just like Valheim, to be fair.

In this open-world, open-ended zombie survival game, your main task is to rebuild a thriving community. Interact with survivors scattered around the game world, recruit them, build a settlement, and defend your precious resources from zombies, looters, and whatever else is out there. Although the game is currently using a randomly generated world, a story mode is planned to be added later. If you’re avoiding Early Access titles and want to play a more “complete” game though, you can buy the prequel, Survivalist, for just $4.99. Both games support up to a four-player co-op where your friends will play as the survivors you’ve recruited.

If Only I Got Paid For This…

In the Space Rig at the back of the Abyss Bar is the Barrel Hoop game, which involves kicking barrels into a hoop to score points. Each normal barrel gives 10 points, a red barrel gives 25, and with time you rapidly score, you enter a hot streak. Hot streaks will give you a 2x modifier up to 4x the points if you continue to score.

The If Only I got Paid For This… achievement involves getting 3000 or more points in less than 100 kicks. The Barrel Hoop game also has various unproducible speeds, making practice the best method for achieving this. Try to capitalize on hot streaks as much as you can and practice whenever you can between missions.
