#11 The Forest
The Forest is a survival game with horror elements. In this title, players find themselves crashing down on a mysterious island. With no other survivors on your flight, you quickly notice your son is missing. This prompts players to start looking around the island, which you’ll soon discover is filled with mutated tribes. To keep alive and find your son, the goal is first to make camp. This includes gathering up resources like logs and building up different structures to keep yourself safe. From there, it’s exploring the area for clues, more resources to build up weapons and get to the bottom of where your son is located. You won’t find this game very long if you’re going through the story, so if you want something to get through on the weekend, then this is one game to look into.
League of Legends

League of Legends is one of the most important video games of the past decade, and it has helped set an example for what a continuous game should look like. It’s an incredible live-service game with tons of new content added each year. It’s a complex strategy game that never plays out the same way twice. It’s one of the biggest esports in the world. And it’s completely free to play. While League wasn’t the first game to claim any of those accolades, Riot learned lessons from League’s predecessors (such as Starcraft and the original DOTA mod) to push the envelope of what a prestigious competitive game could look like, and has managed to keep it relevant for 13 years.
In true MOBA form, 10 players matchmake into a game together and are split into two teams. Each player on each team is then assigned a role, and they can choose from over 160 different characters to support their allies. During the match, the goal is to reach the other side of the arena and destroy the enemy team’s base. This results in a tense push and pull between both teams, gathering gold and empowering their heroes.
It’s extremely complex — almost like learning a new language — but that complexity is what keeps the game interesting and fun. After thousands of matches, there’s still nothing quite like spending an entire Saturday playing League of Legends and getting a new experience almost every time. —RG
Detroit: Become Human

Mafia was a fantastic mobster game back when it was released in 2002. Of course, games back then were a bit rough to enjoy visually today. Fortunately, Mafia was given a massive overhaul. It looks and plays like a modern title release. It’s more of a period mafia game where you step into the role of a cab driver that happens to help out some members connected with the mob. You’re then convinced to join in and make some real money. The storyline is full of ups and downs. Likewise, this game is set in an open world, so you can drive around and explore. However, since this game was originally released in 2002, there wasn’t a ton for players to do within the city outside of missions. Regardless, the game visually is quite a feat, and you’ll get a look at a bustling 1930 Illinois fictional city.
God of War

Throughout the game, players are looking for a way to get off the island, but you’ll have to explore the ocean depths. From there, you’ll explore the different biomes, gather resources, build up a base along with means of traveling around the open waters. However, it’s not all about exploration and keeping your vitals up. You’ll have to be careful not to approach hostile enemies that may be lurking about. If you enjoy this game, then it’s worth pointing out that there’s a spin-off title as well, which is a bit smaller in scope, called Subnautica: Below Zero.

Control is a solid DirectX 12 benchmark thanks to its access to real-time ray tracing and Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). The game is a machine of physics simulations and lighting, highlighting some of the most demanding tasks PCs can handle today. Unfortunately, it lacks a built-in benchmark, so you’ll need to find a patch of the game to test yourself.
Although Control is great for testing the latest GPU technologies, it’s not consistent. Enemy spawns are random, so it’s hard to find a consistent place to test, and the physics simulations can throw things out of whack. Still, Control is a great way to push your hardware and test the newest features available on graphics cards.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Following on from the critically-acclaimed Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is another fantastic chapter in the sumptuously detailed 2D platform game. What you get here isn’t just a generic platformer, but an open world based in a forest made up of multiple regions, styled to come alive in 2D. The game is stuffed full of attention to detail, from the way background art shifts as you move Ori through the world, to the creepy movements of enemies. And it’s all punctuated by a soaring music score that almost tells a story by itself.
This game already ran well on the Xbox One X. But on the Series X, and indeed the Series S, Ori and the Will of the Wisps will run at a super-smooth 120 fps, if you have the hardware to take advantage of the frame rate. As it’s part of Xbox Game Pass, there’s very little excuse to miss out on Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

While Hitman 3 doesn’t introduce much to the game, it’s basically the finest iteration and implementation of all the systems the reboot of Hitman brought in from 2016 onwards.
As such you’re looking at a game with a suite of near-perfectly constructed missions, filled with interesting ways to dispatch various targets. These range from clever deception to simply shoving someone off the world’s largest building. Stand-out missions involve infiltrating a warehouse rave in Berlin and exploring the neon and rain-soaked streets of China’s Chongqing, to infiltrating a country manor house in a wind-swept and bleak segment of England’s Dartmoor. But beyond the locations, the structure of the missions are rich and deep. You can follow a variety of opportunities that arise to carefully kill a tricky target, or you can switch off a load of hints and figure things out for yourself. Either way, you’re in for one of the finest stealth experiences on the Xbox Series X.

If you want new missions, newer weapons, and harder challenges, you can venture into the dungeons with the 6 DLCs. Unlike Minecraft, the story has advanced cinematic elements and a story-driven linear progression.
The main mission of the story is to save the world from the tyrannous clutches of Arch-Illager. You can ride into battle alone or protect the villagers with your squad as you go through wildly varied levels in this terrific quest to freedom.

Chances are you’re familiar with Rust. This game came out a few years ago through early access, but it’s now fully available today. In this game, players wash up on shore with absolutely nothing but their fists. From there, you’ll have to gather resources to build structures, weapons, and clothing. You’ll then be able to hunt down animals, explore the open world, fight off other players, gather their resources, form up a team, reach different areas to pick up airdrops, or chart out the lands that you want to make a claim over. It’s an action MMO game that you could play solo or with a group of friends.

What started out as a bit of a thin experience on the Xbox One and PC has matured into a much deeper game full of secrets, including a gigantic kraken to take on. The optimized version for the Xbox Series X will run at 4K and a smooth 60 fps, making the whole experience plain sailing on Microsoft’s new flagship games console.

We all know that Ubisoft loves making open-world games. Seriously, they can’t get enough of it, and pretty much all of their franchises have open-world elements in one form or another. But in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, they might just be taking it to the next level.
First and foremost, yes, you are on the same Pandora as the two James Cameron movies. But just as important, you’re in a section of Pandora that the films haven’t touched. You’ll meet an entirely new Na’vi tribe and get to explore their world while helping them fight off the humans who captured you and are trying to invade.
There’s plenty to see, so don’t be afraid to venture far and wide!
Destiny 2

Destiny 2 combines a typical loot-based shooter with Bungie’s best-in-class gunplay, and the result is one of the greatest MMOs on the market.
The Destiny franchise has had some rough patches, and was met with mixed reception at its initial launch. But in the eight years that it’s existed, Bungie has drastically improved the formula via multiple expansions and a complete sequel. Now, the studio has one of the most well-supported live-service games in 2023.
Every few months, Destiny 2 gets a new season or expansion, adding missions, activities, and endgame content like raids. Each of these different activities then provides its own unique rewards, creating an endless loop of grinding new activities for new weapons, which you’ll then use to grind the next season’s content. What makes that fun and not tedious, however, is Bungie’s extremely smooth gameplay, which can remain fun thousands of hours and nearly a full decade later.
Remarkably, Destiny 2 is only getting better. 2022 not only saw the series’ best expansion yet, but it also delivered an excellent story and added new weapons the likes of which players have never seen. In a world filled with hobby games that you can play for years without stopping — especially on PC — Destiny 2 is worth all the time you’re willing to put into it. —Ryan Gilliam
