This game was published by iD Software. However, it was made by another developed using the same engine used to make Doom.

Hexen: Beyond Heretic is a direct sequel to Heretic, another first-person shooter that looks a lot like Doom and might have borrowed a lot of ideas from it. On the other hand, it also comes with innovative concepts.

You must choose one of the three available classes at the beginning of the game. Each comes with unique weapons. The fighter uses primarily melee weapons and can take more damage. The wizard uses devastating spells and is supposed to be fragile. Finally, we have a class that is somewhat between the previous two classes, the Cleric.

This might be the first game of the genre with a class system. On top of that, it also brilliantly uses pattern learning and the environment to make interesting challenges to the players. Hexen was amazingly well designed for its time.

GTA 5

GTA 5 is a game that has shaped PC gaming with its open-world design and storytelling, which is often as vapid but simultaneously enjoyable as a movie blockbuster. While the story alone makes it worth a play — as exaggerated and trippy as it can get — GTA 5’s eternal charm lies in how you’ll inevitably get distracted by side missions, or beautiful cars to steal, or simply seeing what’s around the next bend.

Everything in GTA 5, from its online multiplayer to its heists, lives from its tight, open world, an exceptionally well-designed place you simply want to get to know – not a lot of games have offered such a good open-world since, especially not in a metropolitan setting.

When this game first launched as a PlayStation exclusive, it immediately fulfilled the Spider-Man fantasy. Webslinging, whether in combat or as a traversal mechanic, simply feels fantastic, and Spider-Man’s New York is one of the most beautiful video game cityscapes to date. The story, which you can enjoy even if you’re not familiar with the Marvel comics universe, takes you on a tour with all of Spider-Man’s nemeses, friends, and family members, and even the side missions are continuously fun.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is the superhero action game to measure licensed games by, full of love for its subject and simply a joy to play, combining stealth, action, and a great story, all of it looking extra sparkly in the remastered PC version.

Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines

Around the time Half-Life 2 debuted, another influential game was released. Bloodlines was an underappreciated jewel, but, today, it’s considered a key moment for the immersive RPG genre with vast consequences and dialogue mechanics.

The story follows a human who died and was revived as a vampire. The setting is a semi-open world 21st Century Los Angeles, as you have to unlock map areas by progressing the quest. Then, the story is a journey about discovering a conspiracy that may end all vampires.

Into the Breach

It’s chess, but with rocket launchers and mechs instead of knights and bishops. Okay, it’s not actually chess, but Into the Breach’s rules feel equally as simple and elegant. Your alien enemies — usually giant insects — always telegraph their next move, whether that’s moving one square, attacking a skyscraper, or spitting bile in your direction. It’s your job to slot those puzzle pieces into place, and decide how you can wipe out as many of them as possible in one turn.

You take control of one of eight mech squads, which you unlock sequentially, each with its own specialty. The Blitzkrieg are lightning specialists, the Frozen Titans use ice, the Steel Judoka use raw physical strength. Your three units have their own skills, and you must work out how to apply them to the situation at hand. As the Blitzkrieg, you might use your Hook Mech to move enemies into a line, then strike with your Lightning Mech to send a pulse of electricity through them all, for example. Randomized levels and the chance of upgrading your units keep tempting us back for one more round.

Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas is an open-world action RPG as well, but it focuses on shooting and complex dialogue choices. You play in the Mojave Wasteland, a post-apocalyptic barren to find out who betrayed you.

The story puts you in the middle of a conflict between various factions for the Hoover Dam. Your choices ultimately decide the fate of these factions and the desert. Moreover, the game allows you to approach situations in any order and in any way and delivers branching paths and consequences.

The gameplay can be outdated and janky, though. You shoot and fight in third-person or first-person, and unlock perks, stats, weapons, and more. Additionally, you have the “VATS” system, which slows down the time to click and shoot at your enemies.

Vampire Survivors

If pixel games and roguelites are your bag, Vampire Survivors deserves a mention. It’s an oddly relaxing shoot-’em-up where you move around your character to lay waste to your enemies — all of whom, oddly enough, are not actually vampires. You don’t need to do much more than that, since your character will auto-attack all enemies in its path on your quest to clear each round under timed constraints. Vampire Survivors doesn’t have the realistic graphics and rich open worlds of many other games on this list, but as far as the best Steam games go, its raging popularity has to count for something.

Deathloop

Arkane just knows how to deliver. Dishonored 2 has already spent a long time in our top 30, after much anticipation, but now the studio’s next game also deserves a spot. Deathloop is a first-person shooter with elements governed by a time loop. As assassin Colt, you’re trying to escape an island full of gun-toting inhabitants by killing nine targets and breaking the time loop forcing you to relive the same day. The only problem – these targets can’t be found in the same section of the island, and since you can only visit one section per day, you have to find ways to herd them together over the course of the story.

In order to do this, you not only need to familiarise yourself with your target’s routines Hitman-style, you also need to learn the ins and outs of each section. Arkane once again delivers on great level design, so that there’s plenty to explore. The gunplay feels amazing, and is in typical Arkane style bolstered by a selection of meaningful skills to give you an edge in a fight. This is a time loop game that allows you to retain enough in terms of equipment and progress that things don’t get frustrating. Similarly, there are next to no repeats. There’s a lot to see in Deathloop, and while it refines systems you’ll recognize from other games, it’s another uniquely Arkane affair – executed with style and deeply satisfying throughout.

This title comes with the original Doom game and the new Doom IV.

Doom might not be the original FPS, but it is one of the most memorable to this date. Doom is a game with a lot of originality, even though it borrowed a lot from Wolfenstein 3-D. This is one of the best examples of how a game can use many essential design elements from another title and still be very different.

Instead of shooting evil soldiers, Doom had you in a sci-fi environment where you were literally fighting demons with guns. This premise is crazy unreasonable, but it works phenomenally well for a video game.

This game knows what it is, and it might be one of the oldest self-aware video games that didn’t take it too seriously. The main character, mostly known as The Doom Guy, can take down dozens of demonic entities alone with a shotgun.

Doom is the original arcade shooter. Enemies have patterns, dodgeball projectiles, predictable behaviors, and so on. It is not a perfect game, but it didn’t become a sensation for no reason.

I know I’ve recommended four iD Software games, but if you like one, chances are you will like them all.

Return of the Obra Dinn

Detective games don’t get much better than Return of the Obra Dinn. Gruesome murders and other mysteries took place on a merchant ship, and it’s up to you to figure out what exactly took place, simply by gathering clues and coming to your own conclusions. It’s fascinating how hands-off the game is, too, simply asking you to pay attention to small things many other detective games regularly forget. You need a good eye and patience, but working a mystery out is immensely satisfying.

Return of the Obra Dinn shows that detective mysteries can be so much more than reading text-based clues and doing random puzzles – this is the full sleuthing experience.

Alien Soldier

One of Treasure’s early Genesis shooters, Alien Soldier is a much-loved shooter for its anime-inspired art style and quirky characters.

This game looks unique, and it has surprisingly good pixel art that used to stand out back in the 16-bits era.

Alien Soldier’s gameplay makes you feel powerful from the beginning, but it can be very challenging at times. I remember playing this on the Sega Genesis and loving every second of it.

If you like super-hard boss battles and platform shooters, Alien Soldier might become your favorite retro game.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Cities Skylines

The city-building genre is one of the original pillars of PC gaming, next to CRPGs and real-time strategy, but many of its past franchises have seen better days. But then Paradox Interactive made an attempt at a city-builder in the style of classics like Sim City, to great success – the formula of whiling away your time building a sprawling metropolis holds true.

By now there is likely no bigger game in this genre than Cities: Skylines, and we mean ‘big’ literally – several DLC allow you to build even more stuff and enjoy different seasons. If you like to simply build and maintain a city without having to worry about managing people (ew!), Cities: Skylines remains the best game in that category.

Weird West

Have you ever wanted to play RD2 with isometric graphics and dark magic? How about playing a squad-based action RPG with real-time mechanics? It’s a dark fantasy western setting with six playable protagonists, choices, consequences, and sandbox elements.

Combat is quite immersive. You shoot, kick, use your abilities, and interact with plenty of elements in the environment. That includes rails, explosive TNT barrels, toxins, and more. The world is open, and the choice mechanics blend seamlessly with the world and the action.

Lastly, former Arkane Studio developers are Weird West’s creators. The influence of games like Dishonored and Prey is apparent from the moment the initial credits roll. You’ll see it in the art style, hear it in the music, and enjoy it in the story.

Among other sandbox games, it stands alone in delivering on its promise of total freedom: you can break and place blocks in any way you choose, recreating the whole of Game of Thrones’ Westeros – or crafting a simple seaside shack and living off the land with a fishing rod.

Its multiple modes mean you can play it any way you like, which is a liberating feeling, but the presence of enemies, hidden treasure and twisting cave systems help lend it structure. Its sandbox world never fails to throw ambitious ideas into your head, and then before you know it you’ve spent five hours working, block by block, towards your next self-made objective. Mods and custom maps broaden its scope even further, and it’s at its best when you’re building your next project collaboratively with a friend.

Risk Of Rain 2

SpellForce 3: Versus — условно-бесплатная версия тепло принятой стратегической ролевой игры. Игроки могут сражаться в PvP и PvE.

Отлично подойдет тем, кому не хватило сюжетной кампании. Отзывы в Steam в основном положительные.

Ещё одна игра от Valve, но на этот раз — выросшая из мода для Warcraft киберспортивная стратегия.

С популярностью «Доты» может сравниться лишь её противоречивость — многие геймеры по-настоящему ненавидят эту игру и её сообщество.

Попробуйте, если любите стратегии и не боитесь токсичности.

League of Legends

League of Legends — смесь стратегии и ролевой игры от Riot Games. Популярность LoL безумна: это одна из самых успешных игр в истории, а количество фан-арта и косплея по ней зашкаливает.

SMITE
